In October 2024, the Amancio Ortega Foundation reached an agreement with the Portuguese government to donate 80 million euros to install two proton accelerators in the public health system.
With the addition of these first two devices, the Portuguese health system will be able to treat thousands of patients each year, placing it among the top 30 countries in the world equipped with proton therapy.
The devices will be installed at the Instituto Português de Oncologia de Porto Francisco Gentil, E.P.E. (IPO Porto), an independently managed public institute that concentrates the oncology services of the Portuguese national health system, coordinated by the Ministries of Health and Territorial Cohesion.
The IPO Porto National Proton Therapy Centre will serve the entire national population.
