At the beginning of 2012 and with the aim of supporting the Galician public administration’s commitment to increasing the number of spots at public schools for children from zero to three years old and with the implementation of complementary measures related to work-life balance, the Amancio Ortega Foundation and the Xunta de Galicia signed an agreement to build and furnish new nursery schools with the aim of integrating them into the public network of nursery schools in Galicia.
With a general budget of 32 million euro, the nursery schools financed by the Amancio Ortega Foundation offer a total of 650 newly created sports for children from zero to three years old in the towns they are found in: Ferrol, Melide, Cambre, A Coruña, Arteixo, Santiago de Compostela, Lugo and Ourense.
As part of their facilities, two of these centres include spaces to care for elderly people as a pioneering intergenerational experience in Spain. Specifically, the intergenerational centre in Ourense houses in the same building the nursery school and a day centre for elderly people to promote personal independence and to prevent dependence. On the other hand, the centre in Arteixo is made up of a nursery school and a nursing home for elderly people with a day centre.
